Personal Fitness Syllabus

Personal Fitness

The final grade will be derived on the basis of a numerical grade with a hundred point scale. The numerical grade will be awarded upon evaluation in three areas:
1) 50% Participation - during aerobic, skill, and competitive activities, (50 point debit system);
2) 30% Skill- The average of all skills tests;
3) 20% Written- The average of all written tests
Assignments, classwork & participation – 50%
A 50 point debit system will be used to compute the final grade in this category.

a. Assignments
A daily assignment is the preparation and usage of clothing and footwear that meets the Chattahoochee Physical Education Dress Code. By utilizing a standardized Physical Education Department Dress Code, teachers are able to plan lessons that will be safe and appropriate for students. Students will be graded daily on this assignment using a debit system. Failure to complete the dressing out assignment will result in a maximum 2 point debit.
By a written note a waiver from participation in class work may be requested; however, the daily completion of the dressing out assignment is not optional.
Additional assignments related to the curriculum may also be given.

CHATTAHOOCHEE DRESS CODE
LOCKERS: RENTAL FEE: $10.00 LOST LOCK: $7.50
SHORTS—GYM SHORTS ARE REQUIRED. Shorts may be purchased through the Physical Education Department. Shorts must be solid blue in color. No clothes may be visible under the shorts (e.g. boxers, jams, bike shorts, etc. ) Shorts used may not have any advertising other than CHATTAHOOCHEE logo.

SHIRTS—Shirts may be purchased through the Physical Education Department. Shirts must be a solid white T-shirt with no other advertising other than CHATTAHOOCHEE logo. It should not be ripped, torn, sleeveless or altered in any way and must extend to the shorts ( no shimmels or half-shirts ).

SWEAT PANTS OR WARM-UP PANTS—May be worn instead of gym shorts. They may not be cut off, torn or ripped and should be in compliance with school dress code stating no advertisement of tobacco or alcohol.

SOCKS AND TENNIS SHOES—Socks must be worn and must be white. Appropriate “tennis shoes” must be worn. NO BLACK SOLED SHOES ALLOWED ON GYM FLOOR.

JEWELRY/WATCHES—For safety purposes, jewelry MUST be removed before engaging in activity.

b. Class work & participation
Each student is expected to exert full effort and to participate in all class activities on a daily basis. Since most physical education classes are laboratory-based, active experience in each day’s planned activities is important. Thus, students must attend class, must participate the entire period and must exert full effort in order to earn full credit for their classwork and participation. Students will be graded daily in this category using a debit system.

■ Failure to meet the instructor’s expectations for class participation will result in a 2 point debit with no option for a make up.

■ A reasonable number of absences from school are understandable. However, there is no good way to make up for missed class activities. No debit deductions will be taken for one to five absences.

■ More than five absences are considered excessive. Excessive absences will result in a 2 point debit with the option of making up the points according to the Chattahoochee HS make-up policy. When a student needs to makeup work, see the teacher on the first day back to school.

■ Students who participate in Chattahoochee athletic programs may not use practice time as class makeup work because such a policy would provide double credit (extracurricular athletics & academic classwork) for the same work.

■ A written request for a waiver for activities may be requested on limited occasions.
A parent note may request modified activity for a maximum of 3 days.
A physician’s note may request modified activity for a maximum of 3 weeks. Over three weeks will result in withdrawal from the course with no credit.

■ A temporary or permanent disability that prohibits a student’s full participation in classwork must be documented by a physician’s note that clearly describes the physical accommodations needed or the activities that are contra-indicated. If the disability is temporary, a timeframe must accompany the suggested modifications. The instructor will provide modified classwork to accommodate the student needs; however, the expectation to complete classwork assignments will not be eliminated. Unless medically prohibited, the assignments will be activity-based designed to simulate the regular class activities as closely as possible.

II. SKILL GRADE – 30%
Each student’s mastery of skills will be evaluated during the semester and recorded by the instructor. Standardized skills tests and the teacher’s professional assessment of this performance of basic skills will be used to assess skill mastery. The final average of these evaluations will be converted to a point value ranging from 1 to 30. These points will be added to the participation and written point totals.

III. WRITTEN GRADE – 20%
Each student’s knowledge of the subject matter will be evaluated during the semester using valid tests and/or written assignments. The final average of these written evaluations will be converted to a point value ranging from 1 to 20. These points will be added to the participation and skill point totals.

STUDENT BEHAVIOR: Students are expected to display appropriate behavior described in the Student Handbook. IN ADDITION, ABSOLUTELY NO CHEWING GUM OR FOOD ALLOWED IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLASS. This includes all physical education areas including but not limited to: the main gym, auxiliary gym, classroom, and the weight room. Any food or drink brought into these areas will be confiscated. Students failing to adhere to this policy are subject to a discipline referral.

RECOVERY:
Provision for improving grades
1. Opportunities designed to allow student to recover from a low or failing cumulative grade will be allowed when all work required to date has been completed and the student has demonstrated a legitimate effort to meet all course requirements including attendance.
Students should contact the teacher concerning recovery opportunities. Teachers are expected to establish a reasonable time period for recovery work to be completed during the semester. All recovery work must be directly related to course objectives and must be completed ten school days prior to the end of the semester.
2. Teachers will determine when and how students with extenuating circumstances may
improve their grades.
3. Participation in an athletic team can not be substituted for participation in this class.

CHATTAHOOCHEE SCHOOL GUIDELINES:
Recovery is available to students with a cumulative average grade below 74% after a minimum of two major grades. The maximum grade a student can earn from a recovery is a 70%. There will be only one recovery opportunity per failed major assignment or test. The individual teacher will determine the means of recovery. THE STUDENT MUST INITIATE THE PROCESS WITHIN FIVE DAYS OF NOTIFICATION OF A FAILING GRADE ON A MAJOR ASSSIGNMENT.

- STUDENTS ARE REMINDED THAT THEY MUST REMAIN IN THE P.E. HALLWAY AT THE END OF THE CLASS ACTIVITY PERIOD. YOU MAY NOT WAIT IN THE STAIRWAY OR OUTSIDE OF THE BUILDING FOR THE BELL TO RING.
